The lesson is specifically designed to help you: (1) select the correct Chief Complaint Protocol, (2) understand the rationale behind asking each of the MPDS Key Questions, (3) determine the correct MPDS Determinant Descriptor, and (4) select the appropriate Dispatch Life Support instructions for these patients.
CDE 37: The MPDS® Convulsions/Seizures Protocol
This lesson discusses the use of the MPDS Convulsions/Seizures Protocol. It begins with a brief discussion of seizure pathology and causes of seizures including: cardiac arrest, diabetes, drug use, eclampsia, epilepsy, fever, hypoxia, meningitis, trauma, and tumors. It then discusses types of seizures including: absence (petit mal) seizures, atonic (drop attack) seizures, myoclonic seizures, tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures, focal/local seizures, and temporal lobe/psychomotor seizures. The lesson then discusses problems associated with seizures including: postictal confusion, airway control, aspirated secretions, continuous and multiple seizures, inappropriate CPR, and tongue biting. The rest of the lesson is specifically designed to help you: (1) select the correct Chief Complaint Protocol, (2) understand the rationale behind asking each of the MPDS Key Questions, (3) determine the correct MPDS Determinant Descriptor, and (4) select the appropriate Dispatch Life Support instructions for seizure patients.
